Don't impeach Bush

Lately, Congressional Democrats have been discussing the possibility of impeaching President Bush. He is probably one of our worst presidents, and I am proud to say that I voted for the decorated hero.

Bush has led us into war on the flimsiest pretext and the laws enacted in his administration have been abused to federal officials, to the detriment of our constitutional rights. The United States has become a nation that uses torture and locks people up without charges. We are engaged in something candidate Bush said we would never do, and that is “nation building.” He has politicized the justice department.

He deserves to be impeached, and most of us have done things for which we deserve the severest punishment. The larger realities demand that Democrats hold off from doing something foolish. To begin with, it has the appearance of payback for the Clinton impeachment.

Such a measure should be an extraordinary response to the worst behavior, not routine political vengeance. The American people hate political bickering, and right now the worst offenders are the right wing loudmouths. The D’s should not give the other side any kind of ammunition.
