Episcopal Church Elects 26th. Presiding Bishop

This is old news to many of you. The following comes from Episcopal News Service, as does appropriate photo credit.

[Episcopal News Service] Katharine Jefferts Schori, bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, has been elected June 18 by the House of Bishops as the 26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The House of Deputies is discussing a resolution to confirm the election, as is required by church canons. ENS will post more information after that vote.

If you want the straight dope, Kendall Harmon's great blog has the latest news and many great links for reaction (if you can get in).

My reaction? You will need to wait.

Comments:
Pat, you may remember me. Donna and I used to meet with you and Marie occasionally for dinner. I’m a member of the Episcopal Church. I went to Catholic schools, and I grew up with priests and nuns in the old way (yes, with nuns in “penquin suits”), so I’m pretty much a traditionalist and think men should be the leaders. I admit that at first, I didn’t approve of women priests, but now I’ve seen how dedicated they are, and how they bring a softer, more nurturing way to the people, and I think it’s good. But a woman for a bishop? I don’t think many of us are ready for that. I think most of us still look to men for leadership. However, there’s nothing to be done about it but to accept it and move on.

We’ve been hearing so much of how the early Church kept women out of Scripture to keep them from becoming leaders. I don’t know how true that is, although I think it’s likely, but at any rate, times are changing and women are coming into new horizons. This new election doesn’t mean this is the way it will be forever. Probably next time, a man will elected. I think as Christians we can only pray that the delegates to the convention do the right thing for the right reasons, and chose the right person, whatever their gender. We can keep a prayerful heart, give it a chance, and “go in peace to love and serve the Lord.”

Which brings me to something I totally disagree with you on. I don’t think the Book of Common Prayer “anesthetizes” the people – no more than praying the Lord’s Prayer, which can be nothing more than a recitation. But that’s the point I’d like to make with anyone who thinks the Prayer Book is not “real” prayer. You can either RECITE these prayers, or you can SAY THEM FROM THE HEART. That’s between the individual and God, and only they know which it is.

Thank you for “listening” to me.

It is easy to hear so much common sense and I appreciate what you have to say, even the parts with which I disagree.

I am Arkansas' leading Pharasee when it comes to the Book of Common Prayer, so it pains me to say that the 1928 BCP was the constant companion of Pike, Spoong, Griswald and the whole sorry bunch. I read from the 1928 BCP every day. It can rouse the spirit, or dull the senses.

Some folks worship the 1928, but it is merely a good tool. I am grateful to have it.

Thanks for the kind thoughts,
Pat
