Academics Plus must die.

This will sound harsh, and I do actually have some empathy for the youngsters facing loss of a beloved school. Nonetheless, there is a very hard reality which must be faced. A group of individuals wrested control of a fine academic program offering quality education to children of all races and economic classes and they ran off the Stephens money and the professional administrator. According to reports, the former president is suing.

Many parents, seeing the immediate decline of the operation, removed their children. This caused state per-pupil contributions to fall drastically. This, dear friends, is what we call the "free market." The very people this school was designed to please voted with their feet. Remember, parents at Academics Plus had to sign a contract to participate in the school program. These are not your typical don't give a damn public school parents who consider school little more than babysitting.

It is not good news that an insurance company has decided to subsidize non-performance and it is a damn shame if others go along. It is also a significant waste of taxpayer money to support a watered down so-called shell of a charter school.

Comments:
I think you’re off the mark on this one Lyncho…. From the comments I have read to the posting on Arkansas Times’ Blog, it appears that many of the parents felt the problems with the school were related to the administrator. It appears they were frustrated from a lack of support both in staffing and equipment/supplies. It sounds as though Dr. Proctor was an ineffective leader who needed to be forced out….

I would like to see how the test scores change next year with her gone. I would not look at the scores for this year because Dr. Proctor was just forced out and the school has been facing this problem which has been distraction of the last few weeks.

I think the concept of charter schools is noble one plus this one is very unique allowing graduates to obtain an associates degree at the same time they get their high school diploma…

I think the school is a wonderful concept, and it looks a lot like that has been lost. I hope it is just the way you say, but I have some serious questions. Thanks for the input!
