Could it be that the Southwest Effect is just PR and not for real?

Guess what, that is exactly what American Airlines wanted to discover when it hired professional researchers to do the dirty work.

The Southwest Effect is a standard term in the aviation industry which states that fares go down and traffic goes up when Southwest enters a market. All of this matters because Southwest is still campaigning to repeal the Wright Amendment which restricts flights from Love Field.

You know the drill. The Headline is the link. Enjoy.

These AA guys are amazing. I suppose when they're banking hundreds of millions per year in excess profits off of a protected monopoly, they have enough power (or gall) to think they can dupe the public into thinking that white is black and black is white.

For crying out loud, there are reams and reams of studies backed by mounds of reliable data collected by the DOT which confirm the "Southwest Effect."

Even the Federal Trade Commission has come down hard on the punitive impacts of the Wright Amendment.

No one doubts the Southwest effect, but I think it's outrageous that Southwest won't simply move to DFW. They claim they want fair, head-to-head competition, but that won't be the case if they keep their monopoly at Love. They should move to DFW and compete with American on the same turf.

Southwest has millions and millions of dollars invested at Love Field... the rest of the airline industry was deregulated in 1978, it makes no sense to make Southwest move just because AA says so.
